High School Profile 2011-2012

The School and Accreditation

Fukuoka International School (FIS) is a private co-educational day school providing an internationally accepted diploma. FIS offers classes from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school was founded in 1972 with a high school program added in 1990. The school year is divided into two semesters extending approximately from August 25 to June 20. FIS is accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education as a School Juridical Body, “Gakko Hojin.” It is also accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which is the official accrediting body for American Overseas schools in East Asia and the Pacific Area. In August 2007, FIS received official authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization and now offers the IB Diploma Program.

Location and facilities

FIS moved into a newly constructed two -story building with a gymnasium in the 1990-91 school year. The campus is located in the western part of Fukuoka City, known as Momochi, and overlooks Muromi River. The current facilities include 20 classrooms, 2 science labs, 2 music rooms, 2 computer labs, gymnasium, art room, kitchen, dispensary, conference room, PTA lounge and a 10,000 volume library. The Annex, opened in the 2003-2004 school year, is located about a 4-minute walk from the main campus and houses the FIS Arts Center. The FIS campus is easily accessible by public transportation.

Class Rank & GPA

The GPA is calculated on a not-weighted 4.0 scale. FIS has eliminated class rank. It is difficult to calculate a meaningful comparison since our international student population is highly transitory and many students do not attend FIS high school for their entire secondary school career.
