History

History

Fukuoka International School is a private, non-sectarian, co-educational day school which offers a comprehensive educational program for students of all nationalities. In 1972, the Fukuoka International School was established upon the closure of the U.S. Air Force Base School in Itazuke. It is the only accredited Pre-K to 12 international school on Kyushu. Since 1974 the school has been a member of JCIS – the Japan Council of International Schools. In 1987, FIS became a member of EARCOS – the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools.

The original school building and land were owned and supplied by the Japan Baptist Mission, but the growth of the foreign population and demands of education compelled the school to expand. In 1988, the Fukuoka International School Founding Committee, composed of about 60 government and civic groups, was formed to develop a larger, high quality international school in Kyushu. In September 1990, the new school was completed with donations from the community. FIS has continued to grow throughout the years. In 2003, a Fine Arts/Music center was opened also housing instructional classrooms. In 2007, the administration offices were relocated to the 3rd floor of the admin building to create additional classroom space. Please see Facility Map of this website.
