Annual School Events

1. Open House Open-house is held in the beginning weeks of the school year. The purpose is for parents to meet teachers and visit classrooms. Content area maps for each subject are distributed at this time. Grading systems can be presented and samples of textbooks reviewed. Discussions of individual student performance will take place during parent-teacher conferences scheduled separately.
2. Spirit Week Spirit Week is scheduled for the week prior to Sports Day. Special events and theme days are identified by faculty and students at elementary, middle and high school levels. The emphasis is on using spirit and energy to unify FIS staff and students.
3. Sports Day Schools in Japan have a tradition of scheduling an annual School Sports Day to celebrate health and promote physical fitness. Fukuoka International School observes this host nation tradition and has traditionally calendared this event in the beginning months of school. The entire student body and faculty participate in this. Sports Day is a very unifying exercise for the school community with the P.T.A. Support.
4. Talent Show The talent show is an opportunity for students to express themselves and showcase talent. Auditions and practices are held after school. The evening performance is well attended by members of the FIS school community.
5. United Nations Day Each year, the creation of the United Nations at the San Francisco Peace Conference in 1945 is celebrated in October. Many International Schools use the occasion as an opportunity for the students to re-affirm their values for peace, prosperity and unity for all of humankind. By taking the opportunity to celebrate the inception of the United Nations and the ideals represented by the organization, the students have the values of tolerance and respect for diversity among cultures as well as individuals reinforced.
6. Model United Nation Fukuoka International School is proud to offer the Model United Nations program to students in the high school. MUN is an internationally recognized program in which students research current world issues and attend conferences to develop solutions. FIS MUN students travel to Seoul, South Korea, every November to participate in SEOMUN, an English-language Model United Nations conference attended by schools across East Asia. This trip is paired with outside-the-classroom travel in South Korea, for a trip that truly expands students' perspectives on the world. MUN helps students develop research skills, critical thinking skills, writing skills, and public speaking skills, which are cross-curricular skills applicable in many other classes. In addition, thanks to MUN, FIS students become better global citizens prepared to take on leadership roles in an exciting and international future.
7. Halloween Halloween at FIS is a time for students to dress-up in amazing costumes and experience activities that entertain children everywhere. The day begins with elementary trick-or-treating throughout the school, followed by a Halloween Parade/Fashion Show in the gym. High school students coordinate activity stations for students in Pre-K through Grade 8, creating two hours of fun and great memories. Some of the highlights include face-painting, jack-o'-lantern carving, musical chairs, pumpkin toss (mini-basketball) and story time. This day is a wonderful opportunity for the entire school to interact and play together.
8. Winter & Spring Concerts Another highlight of the school year are the Winter and Spring programs in which the students are able to demonstrate their newly acquired and/or improved musical skills and dramatic abilities. These programs serve as yet another opportunity for the school and families to come together in support of the student's educational development.
9. Winter Fest Winter Fest is a week dedicated to enjoy winter sports, and theme days designed to build energy and create school spirits. Events and activities vary across elementary, middle, and high school levels. Japan day is scheduled within the winter fest event.
10. Japan Day Japan day is an opportunity for FIS to honor the culture of the host country. A whole school assembly is held followed by activities prepared by FIS students. Teachers of Japanese language serve as advisors for this special afternoon.
11. Spring Festival The P.T.A. sponsors a biannual fund-raising event known as the Spring Festival traditionally held in the spring. This event is one in which parents, faculty and students are involved. Proceeds from the Spring Festival are used to purchase items and fund projects which, otherwise, would not be possible.
12. Awards Ceremony Special award ceremonies are held on the same day at different times for elementary, middle, and high school students.
13. Prom Prom is an annual event for high school students to formally honor the senior class. Planning, event coordination, and fundraising is conducted by the Junior class (Grade 11) as a tribute to their friends who will graduate only a few days later. Prom includes an elaborate buffet dinner, musical entertainment, a Senior Prophecy, and a coronation ceremony for the Prom King, Queen, Prince and Princess. Each year, the celebration is based on a theme such as Italian Masquerade (2009) or Hollywood Night (2010). High School teachers and members of the Administration are present to serve as chaperones and enjoy the evening with the students. This is a tradition in which most high school students participate and look forward to through the school year.
14. Graduation Graduation, also known as "Commencement," is a milestone in every child's life. This ceremony is a formal way of acknowledging the completion of each student's four years of secondary education and celebrating the graduates' transition to advanced studies beyond high school. The occasion is steeped in tradition from the wearing of the cap (mortarboard) and gown, to the presentation of diplomas and the tassel ceremony. Graduation typically features a Commencement Address given by a distinguished member of the community, speeches from the Student Council President and Senior Class Representative, and the presentation of a PTA scholarship.
